Minors, students and training wages: who may be paid less than the rate on this page
Under Indiana law, employers may pay a training wage of $4.25 per hour to employees who are under 20 years of age. This lower rate applies only for the first 90 consecutive calendar days after the employee is initially hired. After that period ends, or once the employee turns 20 (whichever comes first), the employer must pay at least the standard minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. This provision allows Indiana employers to bring on younger workers at a reduced rate during an introductory period, while still ensuring that those workers eventually receive the full minimum wage. Workers who are 20 or older, or who have been employed for more than 90 consecutive days, are not eligible for this subminimum training wage and must be paid the regular rate.

Overtime is paid at one and one-half times the regular rate
Under the Indiana Minimum Wage Law, employers must pay overtime compensation at 1 ½ times the employee's regular rate of pay for any hours worked beyond 40 in a work week. This means that for each hour over 40, the worker earns time and a half rather than their usual hourly rate. The law does contain many exceptions to this overtime requirement, and most of those exceptions are listed in Indiana Code § 22-2-2-3 (a) – (p). Workers and employers in Indiana should review that section to determine whether a particular job or situation falls under one of the statutory exemptions. Even when an exception applies, the regular minimum wage of $7.25 per hour still applies to all hours worked.
The Indiana Minimum Wage Law generally requires employers to pay employees at least the minimum wage for all hours worked and to pay employees 1 ½ times their regular rate of pay (“Overtime compensation”) when employees work more than forty (40) hours during a work week. However, there are many exceptions to the overtime pay re- quirement. Most of those exceptions can be found at Indiana Code § 22-2-2-3 (a) – (p).

State minimum wage laws that give more than the federal rate
Most Indiana employers and employees are covered by the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). However, those who are not covered under federal law may still be covered by the Indiana Minimum Wage Law. When both laws apply, a worker in Indiana is entitled to whichever minimum wage is higher. Currently the Indiana rate and the federal rate are the same at $7.25 per hour, so the practical result is the same regardless of which law covers a particular worker. The Indiana statute serves as a backstop ensuring that no worker in the state falls below $7.25 per hour even if the federal law does not reach their employer.
Most Indiana employers and employees are covered by the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA); however those not covered under federal law may still be covered by the Indiana Minimum Wage Law.

When tips, meals or lodging count toward the minimum wage
Indiana employers may pay tipped employees a direct cash wage of $2.13 per hour if the employer claims a tip credit. The employee's tips count toward the minimum wage obligation, but only if the tips combined with the $2.13 hourly wage add up to at least $7.25 per hour. If the employee's tips combined with the hourly wage do not equal the full minimum wage, the employer must make up the difference. This means that tipped workers in Indiana are always guaranteed to receive at least $7.25 per hour in total compensation, whether that amount comes from tips, the employer's cash wage, or a combination of both. The document does not address meal or lodging credits.
Generally, employers must pay tipped employees at least $2.13 per hour if the employer claims a tip credit. If the employee’s tips combined with the hourly wage do not equal the minimum wage, the employer must make up the difference.
