In Idaho, employers must pay a regular minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, but may pay a lower direct cash wage of $3.35 per hour to a tipped employee. The difference between these two amounts is the tip credit. An employer in Idaho can use the tip credit to reduce its cash wage obligation, but the employee's tips must make up the gap so that total hourly earnings reach at least $7.25 for every hour worked. If in any workweek the employee's cash wage plus tips falls below $7.25 per hour, the employer must cover the shortfall.
