Who it applies to

Employers in Mississippi that are subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act, and their employees. Because the table records no state minimum wage law for Mississippi, the entry states no employer-size condition, no premium-pay line and no adjustment formula, and the coverage question is a federal one rather than a state one. The table does not display subminimum rates for minors, students or trainees, training wages for new hires, or any rate set by a local government.

What changed this year, and why

The U.S. Department of Labor's table of state minimum wage laws, updated July 1, 2026, records that Mississippi has no state minimum wage law, and that employers subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act must pay the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. The figure on this page is that federal rate reaching the state through the Act, not a rate Mississippi sets. The entry records no step inside 2026 and no year-over-year change is stated here.

Common questions

What is the minimum wage in Mississippi in 2026?
It is $7.25 per hour for employers subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act. The Department of Labor's State Minimum Wage Laws table, in the version updated July 1, 2026, records that Mississippi has no state minimum wage law and that Act-covered employers must pay the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. The figure published here is taken from that entry.
Does Mississippi have its own minimum wage law?
No. The table's Mississippi entry is the line stating that there is no state minimum wage law, followed by one sentence on federal coverage. Where other jurisdictions' entries give a basic minimum rate the state sets, and often a premium-pay line or an adjustment formula beside it, Mississippi's entry gives none of that, and the rate published here is the federal one the entry cites.
Which Mississippi employers have to pay $7.25 per hour?
The entry names employers subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act. It does not set out which employers those are: coverage under the Act is decided in federal law, and this table is a list of state rates rather than a coverage test. An employer outside the Act is outside what the entry states, and the table records no state rate that would apply instead.
Is there a tipped minimum wage in Mississippi?
The Department of Labor's state table lists no cash wage for tipped employees in the Mississippi entry, so this page does not publish one. The table states that differential provisions are not displayed in it, naming subminimum rates for minors and students and training wages for new hires as its examples, and the entry itself records no state minimum wage law under which a state tipped rate would sit.
Does the Mississippi minimum wage change during 2026?
The table lists no change for Mississippi. Its entry states no state rate and no dated step, and the federal rate it cites is given as the current one as of the table's July 1, 2026 update. A change to the federal minimum wage after that date would not appear here until the department republishes the table and this record is verified against the new version.
Is the Mississippi minimum wage adjusted for inflation?
The entry states no adjustment. Several other entries in the same table say inside the entry that the minimum wage is adjusted annually based on a set formula; Mississippi's says nothing of the kind, because it records no state minimum wage law to adjust. The table states no formula for the federal rate it cites either, giving only the current amount.
Do Mississippi employers owe overtime under state law?
The table's Mississippi entry carries no premium-pay line. For most jurisdictions the entry states a weekly threshold of hours, and sometimes a daily one, after which premium pay is due; Mississippi's entry states none, because it records no state minimum wage law. Overtime in employment covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act is a federal question this table does not set out.
Where does the $7.25 figure on this page come from?
From the Wage and Hour Division's State Minimum Wage Laws table at dol.gov, in the snapshot captured for this record, where the Mississippi entry states that employers subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act must pay the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. The division notes on the same page that individuals should consult the relevant state labor office for official information.

Minors, students and training wages: who may be paid less than the rate on this page

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, certain categories of workers may be paid less than the standard federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Some states allow employers to pay subminimum rates to minors and students, while others exempt these groups entirely or provide a separate training wage for newly hired employees. These special provisions are not shown in the federal table, so workers and employers must look to their own state's labor laws to determine whether a lower rate applies to a given situation. The existence of a subminimum or training wage does not mean that every young worker or student automatically receives a lower rate - the rule depends on state law and the specific circumstances of the job. Employers who believe they qualify for one of these exceptions should confirm the requirements with their state labor office before paying less than the standard minimum.

Some states set subminimum rates for minors and/or students or exempt them from coverage or have a training wage for new hires.

Why the federal rate applies when the state rate is lower

Mississippi has no minimum wage law of its own, which does not mean there is no minimum wage in Mississippi. The Fair Labor Standards Act reaches most employment directly, and an employer subject to it must pay the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour whatever the state does. That is the rate on this page, and it is federal law rather than Mississippi law that puts it there. The practical difference shows up at the edges. A worker whose employer is genuinely outside the FLSA has no state floor to fall back on, where a worker in a state with its own law would. And a complaint about it is a federal complaint: the Wage and Hour Division enforces it, because there is no Mississippi statute to enforce.
