Minors, students and training wages: who may be paid less than the rate on this page
Idaho’s minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, but the state allows certain workers to be paid less. Employees under 20 years old may be paid $4.25 an hour, but only during the first 90 consecutive calendar days of their employment. Tipped employees may be paid $3.35 an hour; the employer must be able to show that the employee’s tips make up the difference so that total earnings reach at least $7.25 per hour. No other subminimum rate for students or trainees is set by Idaho statute, so anyone not in one of those two groups is entitled to the full $7.25 hourly minimum. The lower rates apply only while the worker remains in the qualifying category; once the 90-day period ends or tips no longer bring earnings to the full minimum, the employer must pay the standard rate.
The current Idaho state minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. The minimum wage for a tipped employee is $3.35 per hour. The minimum wage for new hires under the age of 20 years old is $4.25 per hour but only for the first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment.
Frequently Asked Questions on labor laws (Idaho Department of Labor)
When tips, meals or lodging count toward the minimum wage
Idaho allows an employer to count a tipped employee’s tips toward the state minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. The employer may pay a tipped worker a direct cash wage of $3.35 per hour, provided the tips actually received bring the employee’s total hourly earnings to at least $7.25. If the combined amount of the $3.35 cash wage plus tips falls short of $7.25 in any workweek, the employer must make up the difference. Idaho statute does not set a separate credit for meals or lodging, so any such allowance counts toward the minimum wage only if the employer and employee have agreed to it in advance and the value is reasonable; the employer remains responsible for ensuring the worker receives the full $7.25 per hour after the credit is applied.
The minimum wage for a tipped employee is $3.35 per hour.
